Apple iPad 2 Sells Out on First Weekend!

The Apple iPad 2 went on sale on Friday, March 11, 2011 and promptly sold out online then at Apple stores in the USA. Delivery dates were pushed back from days to weeks. As noted by reviewers, the iPad 2 may not be revolutionary, but it is evolutionary.

Analysts are estimating as many as 600,000 iPad 2's may have been sold on the first weekend (beginning on Friday). This exceeds the 300,000 original iPads that were sold on launch weekend in April 2010 and 500,00 sold during the first week. Analysts are saying Apple could have sold even more if there had been sufficient inventory. The iPad 2 launch was broader, involving more stores, than the original iPad and there were no pre-orders this time. Additional shipments were reaching Apple stores on Sunday and Monday.

An informal Piper Jefferey survey of 200 purchasers over the weekend found 70% were new customers and 30% were upgrading from the original iPad. By comparison, the launch of the iPhone 4 had 23% new customers. 65% of iPad 2 buyers owned an iPhone.
