Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon: "It Begins"

Apple iPhone Available on Verizon February 10

Apple and Verizon announced that the iPhone will be available on the Verizon Wireless network on February 10. Apple stated, "Beginning February 10, the phone that changed everything will be available on both AT&T and Verizon Wireless in the United States. Qualified Verizon Wireless customers will also have the exclusive opportunity to pre-order iPhone 4 online on February 3, ahead of general availability. Whichever network you choose, you’ll get FaceTime video calling, the high-resolution Retina display, a 5-megapixel camera, HD video recording, long battery life, and all the other great features of iPhone 4." The Verizon press release is lower on this page.

In the video below, Verizon iPhone: Threat to Android?, Stacey Delo and Dan Gallagher discuss the impact of the Apple iPhone on Verizon to the Google Android smartphone growing market share - the Clash of the Tech Titans. "There's going to be some short-term pain for Android. Near-term it may make a dent in this momentum Android has had.", says Dan Gallagher. "Mid-term and long-term though Android has some advantages that may help it make up some of that pressure." AT&T has been reliant on the iPhone for a lot of its smartphone business, but has also been supporting both Windows phone and Android phone. AT&T announced a "pretty aggressive schedule" to launch Android phones this year. Gallagher thinks that "what Android loses at Verizon they could make up on the back end at AT&T". Stacey Delo notes that in the past Verizon has been "a boon to the Blackberry and Android, so this could potentially be a big boost for Apple". Gallagher notes that "It's not in Verizon's best interests to put all its chips back on Apple. Verizon has diversified well in its smartphone business, so they see Apple as another peg in that, but they don't want that (iPhone) to become their only game in town either."

Gallagher notes that there is a difference in how the two tech titans, Apple and Google, have approached the smartphone business. "Google Android has lots of options out there. Carriers can make use of it at low cost and put out a lot of devices. There's a dark side to this, the Android experience is not universal across the devices. So you have a brand that can get damaged depending on how the device maker uses it. When you buy an Apple product, you know what your experience is going to be. There's not as much of a risk involved."

Delo and Gallagher discuss the outlook for smartphones in 2011 at the end of the video. Gallagher states, "This is a fast growing business that a lot of companies are getting into. Microsoft, Google, Apple, all these very big, very rich companies are putting a lot of effort into this. It's going to be a big year for it. There's plenty of market share to go around."
