Mac App Store: 1 Million Downloads in First Day

Apple Inc. opened the online Mac App Store on Thursday, January 6, 2011. The next day Apple announced the Mac App Store already had 1 million downloads! Has Apple created ultimately the largest online retail software store and model? Will the low cost and ease of obtaining software increase not only sales of software but also Apple computers? It sure looks like it.

Mac App Store Downloads Top One Million in First Day (Apple Press Release: January 7, 2011) Apple announced today that over one million apps have been downloaded from the Mac App Store in the first day. “We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.

The Mac App Store is in response and a challenge to Google's online Chrome Web Store announced at the Chrome Event on December 7 and Microsoft's Office Web Apps. It originally started with Apple, the iTunes and App stores, and was focused on music and mobile apps. Now online apps are being pushed to non-mobile devices, i.e., desktops, by Apple, Google, and Microsoft as cloud computing becomes more prominent. Apple is pushing the cloud to the next level. Apple unveiled the Mac App Store at the Back To The Mac Event on Wednesday, October 20, 2010. The cloud challenge to Microsoft was noted in a video in a previous post [Apple to Open Mac App Store in January (Video) *Cloud challenge to Google & Microsoft*].

As noted in the video below, Apple has "drastically slashed prices" in the Mac App Store. With only 1,000 available apps initially, 1 million downloads were achieved in one day. The upside potential is enormous: "Gartner thinks the global app market, at $4 billion now, could hit $27 billion over the next two years."

NewsyVideos "Analyzing the Mac App Store" It's an app store...for your computer. Brought to you straight from an icon on your desktop- the Mac App Store has arrived. And with just 1,000 available apps, it reached 1 million downloads in its first 24 hours.
